Johannesburg, also known as eGoli (place of gold), is the largest and most populous city in South Africa. Johannesburg is the site of a large-scale gold and diamond trade due to its location on the mineral-rich Witwatersrand range of hills. Johannesburg is also served by O.R. Tambo International Airport, the largest and busiest airport in Africa and a gateway for international air travel to and from the rest of southern Africa. According to the 2001 Census, the population of the city is more than three million. The legendary Kruger National Park in South Africa is the area with the greatest diversity of wildlife in Africa. Born as the Sabie Reserve in 1898 to protect the wildlife from over-hunting, the area was enlarged and proclaimed as the Kruger National Park in 1926. The park today not only protects the wildlife but also the cultural history of the area through museums and the preservation of historical sites.
