Johannesburg, also known as eGoli (place of gold), is the largest and most populous city in South Africa. Johannesburg is the site of a large-scale gold and diamond trade due to its location on the mineral-rich Witwatersrand range of hills. Johannesburg is also served by O.R. Tambo International Airport, the largest and busiest airport in Africa and a gateway for international air travel to and from the rest of southern Africa. According to the 2001 Census, the population of the city is more than three million. Johannesburg also encompasses Soweto to the south west, South Africas most famous township. Soweto is the most populous urban residential area in the country. Thanks to its proximity to Johannesburg, it is also the most metropolitan township in the country - setting trends in politics, fashion, music, dance and language. The legendary Kruger National Park in South Africa is the area with the greatest diversity of wildlife in Africa. Born as the Sabie Reserve in 1898 to protect the wildlife from over-hunting, the area was enlarged and proclaimed as the Kruger National Park in 1926. The park today not only protects the wildlife but also the cultural history of the area through museums and the preservation of historical sites. Game drives are an exhilarating experience! Whether you are up with the birds before sunrise to view the bushveld’s early risers or tracking the nocturnal animals with spotlights at night, safari game drives in the African bush are an experience of a lifetime. The private game reserves along the western border of the Kruger National Park offer the best game viewing experience. There is no fencing between Kruger and the reserves so animals can roam freely between them. The views in all directions are magnificent and the feeling of being on top of the world is what makes this such a popular destination. It’s best to visit on a clear day, though a tablecloth of clouds can descend at any time, flowing over the edge like a breaking wave. Cape Point is the most southwesterly point of Africa where you can breathe the freshest air in the world – straight from the Antarctic from the peak of one of the highest sea cliffs in the world – 249 m above sea level.
